Stories of Stockport’s Last Chimney Premises.

The book describes those premises with chimneys that survived into the 1990’s, their functions and some of the town’s personalities that were associated with them.
It lists 37 buildings and includes: Brickworks, Leather Works, Hat Works, Print Works, Dyeworks, various Mills, Breweries, Baths, Schools, Bleachworks, Bakeries, Hospitals, a Chocolate Factory, etc. There is a map showing the location of every building and the areas covered on the map include: Bredbury, Brinnington, Cheadle Hulme, Davenport, Gatley, Hazel Grove, Heald Green, Heaton Chapel, Reddish, Rose Hill, Stockport, Woodley and Woodsmoor.
There is an index of names associated with each of the buildings listed. One particular building is McVities Biscuit Works on Wellington Road North. It was Robert McVitie (an apprentice baker from Dumfries) that started a bakery in Edinburgh, the story goes on to Robert teaming up with Charles Price. There is a long story of when Robert came to Stockport and opened a factory there.
